Areas of Teaching

Markovits has taught courses in comparative politics, international relations, political sociology and political economy. In terms of geography, his courses have concentrated on Western, Central and Eastern Europe, as well as the United States. Markovits has won a number of teaching awards at the institutions with which he was affiliated as a faculty member. In particular, he won the "Excellence in Teaching" at the University of California, Santa Cruz in 1997 for being the best teacher on campus. In 2007, he was bestowed the Tronstein Prize by the Department of Political Science at the University of Michigan for being the Department’s best undergraduate teacher. In the same year, Markovits was also decorated with the coveted and esteemed Golden Apple Award by the undergraduate student body of the University of Michigan for being the University’s best professor on its entire Ann Arbor campus. Markovits has advised many doctoral dissertations at major American universities, as well as universities in Great Britain, France, Germany, Austria, Holland and Israel.
